EEI and the City of Aurora Accept APWA Public Works Project of the Year Award

The City of Aurora and Engineering Enterprises, Inc. (EEI) accepted the American Public Works Association (APWA), Fox Valley Branch and Chicago Metro Chapter Project of the Year Award in the Structures category for $25 million to $75 million.

The City of Aurora replaced their outdated and over capacity police stations with a new $62 million, state-of-the-art, green headquarters. 500 public safety employees are housed there and it consolidated five police stations, a 911 emergency call center and a branch court house. The new headquarters allows the Aurora Police Department to efficiently use the latest crime fighting technologies in a facility that consumes less energy and water than a similar sized building. The headquarters site was designed to reduce runoff pollution and flooding in the degraded and flood-prone Indian Creek watershed. The project was completed on time and under budget, with a safety record better than industry averages. The community was involved in the design of the facility and provided the impetus for key design features.

The APWA award was established to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects. Criteria for selection included use of good construction management techniques; completion of the project on schedule; demonstration of safety performance; effort to improve the relationship between the agency and the public; and demonstrated intention to protect the environment.
