The Village of Montgomery accepted the American Public Works Association (APWA), Fox Valley Branch and Chicago Metro Chapter Project of the Year Award in the Structures category for $5 million, but less than $25 million for their new Public Works Facility. The project team of Engineering Enterprises, Inc. (EEI), Camosy Construction, and Williams Architects were instrumental in this project.
The Village of Montgomery Public Works Department experienced significant growth since 2000 and was operating in a 48-year-old, shared-use facility, prompting the need for a larger facility. Inadequate space for the expanded operations, minimal amenities for the staff, and limited vehicle storage at the old facility hindered efficiency and equipment lifespan. To address these challenges, the new 74,000 square feet facility was planned, featuring a 51-vehicle storage garage with a freight service elevator to serve the mezzanine level and a wash and maintenance bay for heavy and light service. The comprehensive design also included dedicated areas for Water and Sewer, Building Maintenance, Forestry, and the Streets Division, along with a wellness area, multi-purpose room, locker rooms, administrative offices, and a public lobby. The upgraded facility focused on meeting modern standards, optimizing operational efficiency, and creating a more functional and accommodating space for both staff and visitors.
The APWA award was established to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects. Criteria for selection included the use of good construction management techniques; completion of the project on schedule; demonstration of safety performance; effort to improve the relationship between the agency and the public; and demonstrated intention to protect the environment.
