GRAND PRAIRIE WATER COMISSION (GPWC) ALTERNATE WATER SOURCE PROGRAM
GRAND PRAIRIE WATER COMISSION (GPWC) ALTERNATE WATER SOURCE PROGRAM
In 2018, the City of Joliet initiated a wholistic review of the sustainability of their existing groundwater sources. Once it was determined the City’s existing water source may not be able to meet peak demands in 2030, the study transitioned to evaluating alternative water sources. After evaluating 15 alternative water sources, the City chose to switch to Lake Michigan water through a connection with the City of Chicago. Five other communities, Villages of Channahon, Minooka, Shorewood, and Romeoville and the City of Crest Hill joined the City of Joliet to form the Grand Prairie Water Commission. The $1.4B project is planned to provide Lake Michigan water to all six (6) communities by May of 2030. EEI has been providing planning, design, land surveying, and funding services to the commission members since 2018. EEI also is providing facilitation and administrative services to the GPWC Techincal Advisory Group (TAC).
