About Us

Our Story

In 1974, James K. Michels, who is now retired, opened the doors of EEI in Elburn, Illinois with four employees. The business plan then, as it is now, was to provide civil engineering services to public and private sector clients in northern Illinois.

In 1992, the firm`s scope of services expanded to include land surveying services, and further expanded in 1999 with the acquisition of Dundee Engineering in Dundee, Illinois, a civil engineering and land surveying firm.

After occupying two separate locations in Elburn, Illinois for 20 years, EEI moved to its present facility in Sugar Grove, Illinois in 1994. In 2005, the East Dundee office was relocated to a new and enlarged facility in Hampshire, Illinois. In 2008, all of EEI’s employees were located in the Sugar Grove office.

In 2021, a branch office was opened in Rockford, Illinois to further expand our service region.

In 2022, another branch office was opened in Itasca, Illinois in an effort to grow our existing relationships with our clients and develop new ones with the surrounding communities.

Today, EEI has a staff of over 70 and has the privilege of representing several municipalities as full-time Municipal Engineering Consultants and performing engineering projects in many other communities as well. Our philosophy of putting our clients first has led to many longstanding client relationships.
